Usually people heading to Himachal prefer
go to ‘Shimla—Kullu-Manali’ route.
But if you want something different and quiet, you should visit to the
Dhauladhar circuit. This "Weekend Trip" starts from Chamba.
Chamba
is named after the daughter of Raja Sahil Varman who shifted the capital of the
Kingdom to Chamba from Bharmour in 920. Nestled in the lap of Dhauladhar
and Zanskar ranges, this beautiful town boasts of numerous temple and
palaces. The must visit sites at Chamba are Chaugan, Akhand Chandi
Palace, Chamunda Devi Temple, Lakshmi Narayan temples, Champavati Temple. Situated on the confluence of river Ravi
and its tributary Sai river, Chamba hosts two popular fairs, also called "Jatra",
the “Sui Mata Mela” and the “Minjar Mela” which showcases the local pahari
paintings, handicrafts & textiles, folk music and dancing and lasts for
several days. Chamba, despite its hill location, is well connected
by road to the rest of the country, including Delhi and Chandigarh. The
nearest railway stations are at Chakki Bank and Pathankot, the latter of
which is 120 kilometers away by road..
It takes
approximately 2 hours by bus
services and one and half hours by cab to reach Khajjiar from Chamba. The
government run website says “Often called India’s Switzerland, the exquisite
glade of Khajjiar, 1960 m has a circumference of about 5 km. Along its fringes,
thick forests of deodar climb the slopes, the snow-line rests above these
woods…,” It often intrigues and hooks people to this wonderful and resplendent valley.
Khajjiar was given the title of Mini Switzerland in 1992 by Wiily Blazer, Vice
Chancellor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland. Khajjiar is one of the few
places in the world which has tropical resemblance to Switzerland. The meadows
at Khajjiar mesmerizes people with an immaculate waving landscape with an
almost dried up lake at the center.
Distance between Khajjiar and Dalhousie is 21 km and it takes hardly 50-60 minutes to reach Dalhousie. But keep yourself ready to witness breathtaking views on the
way. The route is very narrow at some places & full of dense forest.
